Turkic World from Crimea to Australia begins with one of the founding fathers of Turkic language and culture, Mahmud al-Kashgarli. The exhibition then looks at how Turkic language and culture has come to Australia. The main themes are outlined below.

Mahmud al-Kashgarli

UNESCO declared 2008 the year of Mahmud al-Kashgarli (Kashgari in Persian) scholar and lexicographer of Turkic languages from Kashgar. This marked the occasion of his 1000th anniversary. Celebrations included an international short story competition.

Mahmud al-Kashgarli studied the Turkic dialects of his time and wrote the first comprehensive dictionary of Turkic languages Dīwānu l-Luġat al-Turk (Arabic: “Compendium of the language of the Turks”) in 1072. It was intended for use by the Caliphs of Baghdad, the new Arabic allies of Turks. The dictionary contains examples of old Turkic poetry in the typical form of quatrains, representing all the principal genres: epic, pastoral, didactic, lyric, and elegiac.

Crimean War

The Crimean War of 1854-56 was fought mainly in the Crimean peninsula, between Russia on the one hand and on the other by Great Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire, with support by Sardinia (Piedmont) from January 1855.

The expansionist aims of Russia, particularly in the Balkans and Black Sea area, were seen as a threat by Britain and France who feared an upset to the balance of power in Europe and had their own plans for a declining Ottoman Empire. Control of the straits that link the Black Sea and Mediterranean was of particular concern to all involved. The catalyst to fighting was a dispute which broke out between Russia and France over the control of Christian shrines in the Holy Land.

Impact

The Crimean War devastated much of the economic and social infrastructure of Crimea. The Crimean Tatars had to flee from their homeland en masse, forced by the conditions created by the war, persecution and land expropriations. Those who survived the trip, famine and disease, resettled in Dobrudja, Anatolia, and other parts of the Ottoman Empire.

While this war broke out thousands of miles away from Australia, and only a handful of Australians participated, the Crimean War left its impact on the colonial population, which gave the mother country its moral and material support. This war strongly influenced the formation of the Russian image in the Australian mind. Never before had the Australian newspapers written so much about Russia, never before had Russian Czarism been condemned by such a number of people during mass meetings. The war also left a visible legacy on the map of Australia, which to this day is decorated by Crimean Tatar names. The language of Turkic peoples arrived in Australia as places were named after battles of the Crimean war.

TURAN

TURAN was created in August of 2004. Irek Garipov, TURAN president, says:

We, the Turkic People of Australia, are resolved to preserve and develop our traditional culture and heritage.

This includes the promotion of friendship and brotherhood among all individuals composing the Turkic community and the establishment of fraternal relations with Turkic peoples elsewhere in Australia and overseas.

TURAN recognize Turkic people as any of the various peoples who speak languages belonging to the Turkic subfamily of the Altaic Family of languages. Turan is the ancient Iranian name for Central Asia, literally meaning ‘the land of the Tur peoples’, and in ancient Iranian mythology, Tur/Turaj is the son of Emperor Fereydun who identified with the Turks in the ‘Shahnameh’ (a famous Persian poem

For Turkic people the name ‘Turan’ historically refers to the geographical area east of the Caspian Sea. As Turkic peoples we define our cultural heritage as from Eurasian peoples residing in Northern, Central and Western Eurasia. Turkic people speak languages belonging to the Altaic language family, which derives its name from the Altay Range of Central Asia. The Turkic languages constitute a language family of some 30 languages. Around 165 million people have a Turkic language as their native language and an additional 20 million people speak a Turkic language as a second language.

TURAN Inc. provides counseling and other necessary assistance to enable the smooth integration of peoples of Turkic origin into the Australian community at large. TURAN works regularly with various communities in Australia including Multicultural SA, the Seniors and Ageing Association of SA, and the Migrant Resource Centre. We also participate in and promote various different cultural activities as you will see in this exhibition.

In one of the Crimean Tatar national publications published an article in which the Crimean Tatar girl, a woman called “guardian of the national gene pool.” Name of this, of course, sweet, and most importantly – to the impossibility of a proud and honorable. However, in recent years raises the question: why is a certain amount of “custodians of the gene pool”, whose number is growing every year, prefer to marry and start a family with representatives of other nationalities, and not with the Crimean Tatar guys. However, in fairness it should be noted, religious and cultural component of the still prevalent, and the majority of elected representatives from the Crimean Tatar Muslims, for example, the Turks, the Kazan Tatars, Arabs and others. So one wonders why, among the Crimean Tatar people, whose representatives are promoting and fighting for their national ideas, there are such phenomena.

It should be noted that the author of the article did not set svoey task to conduct a thorough sociological study, but to create an objective picture of the Crimean Tatar community in the process, conducted a survey of 250 Crimean Tatar girls and women aged 18 to 35 years who have not yet established their families. All of them were asked three questions: “Is it possible to get married not because of the Crimean Tartar?”, “If you – yes, who will be your chosen one?”, And indeed, “Why do you suppose such a possibility?”.

As it turned out, we surveyed 250 of the Crimean Tatar girls and women, 214 stated that “unhappy Crimean Tatar men and not averse to search happiness on the side. Also, it should be noted that out of 214 “potential immigrant” 189 girls see as spouses only representatives of the Islamic culture (mainly Turks, Arabs, and slightly less so on). 25 respondents favorable view of marriage and with representatives of other religious faiths. It can be concluded that the Crimean Tatar environment still pretty much the concept of “one faith” and the girls subconsciously seek to create a marriage is with the religion professed by themselves.

Well, with quantitative indicators, more or less sorted out. Now offer to move to the qualitative component of the question, that is, WHY?

In response, suggest that the view of the Kiev psychologist Suzanne Seit-Khalilov. According to her, the fundamental driving force in this case is the subconscious desire of eastern women feel the freedom and escape from those frameworks that are somehow forcing women Islamic worldview.

“In the course of historical development of Islamic culture have focused on and continues to play a man. Thus, a man can pamper and cherish their woman, but a purely psychological always devoted to her second place and, consequently, dependent position. Hence the unconscious dissatisfaction with women “, – said Susanna Seit-Khalilov.

This is – first. And secondly, the same outlook, according to Susanna Seit-Khalilova, played a cruel joke with the Crimean Tatar men. They therefore outlook, in contrast to women more introverted and zeal to comply with various regulations.

“This is exactly the opposite. As I said, man has always been the highest position. But why change something if everything so well, I can command chief and right and left. Here’s what a hypertrophied form of his understanding of masculinity in the Crimean Tatar environment “- the psychologist explained and clarified that no such trend in the traditionally Muslim countries, due to the fact that there they are as integral a part of a political and economic ways of life.

From the explanations Susanna Seit-Khalilova can see that the root of the problem lies in the specific perception of the national ideology based on Islam, in the European states, such as Ukraine. And given that the economic situation in the country leaves much to be desired, and the young man is often difficult to implement as a full-fledged and self-sufficient man, it is no wonder why for centuries nourished the principles become negative.

Now is the time to open the reader to the fact that 214 women responded to the question why they choose to marry not for the Crimean Tatar.

“Tatar boys and men are rude and do not know how to treat women properly, but the team and all require obedience, jealous of each post and in most cases greedy. Rarely found among the Crimean Tatars really educated and intelligent young man who would see in you a woman, not a housewife “- such was the common response of respondents Crimean Tatar.

Some of the Crimean psychologists Sergei Konovalov also confirms the recent trend in society’s subconscious negative “interpretation of reality” in difficult conditions, such as, for example, crisis, economic instability, unemployment, etc.

“Dissatisfied with his position as a man who, due to certain factors can not realize themselves in life, seeking a basis for self-assertion and often is not where it should be”, – said Sergey Konovalov.

So it turns out that due to a “failed men” and their arrogance Crimean Tatar people can lose the most important – “guardians of the gene pool.”

There is no the Islamic extremism in Crimea, its existence is a myth created by some of politicians on eve of the presidential election. Such opinion was expressed by the Mufti of the “Ummah” Religious Administration of Moslems of Ukraine Said effendi Ismagil in his interview with QHA.

He also added that just term “Islamic extremism” is fallacious one since extremism cannot be as “Islamic” one because Islam doest not justify absolutely and does not permit to do actions that could consider as extremism.

“We do not have manifestations of extremism because the Ukraine’s Moslems are not inclined to extremism by their mentality and culture. They are very tolerant people. We do not have any Islamic extremism in our country for 18 years and it appears suddenly from somewhere. Many Moslems establishes linkage between this outbreak of so-called “Islamic extremism” and the forthcoming presidential elections, calling this as one of political PR-technology. Criminals use the religion as cover, Islam prohibits really to attempt not only Moslem’s life but life of adherent of a different faith or unbeliever”, – said mufti.
